The man accused of killing four people inside a small-town Montana bar has been taken into custody after a tense, weeklong search. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen confirmed that 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown was apprehended around 2 p.m. Friday near the search area in Anaconda. Authorities said additional details about the arrest would be released later in the day.

Tragedy Strikes the Owl Bar

The deadly incident happened on August 1 at the Owl Bar in Anaconda, a community of fewer than 10,000 residents in the southwestern part of the state. Authorities say Brown, who lived next door to the bar, fatally shot three patrons, Daniel Edwin Baille, 59, David Allen Leach, 70, and Tony Wayne Palm, 74, along with the bartender, 64-year-old Nancy Lauretta Kelly.

Massive Search Effort Mobilized

Following the shootings, local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, launched a large-scale search. More than 250 investigators combed rugged terrain by land and air, concentrating on the Stumptown Road area and nearby mountains.

Discarded Items and Stolen Vehicle

Shortly after the killings, authorities released a photo of Brown shirtless, barefoot, and wearing only black shorts. Investigators believe he disposed of personal belongings and clothing, then stole a vehicle containing camping gear. His own white Ford F-150 pickup was found abandoned on the day of the shooting.

Veteran With a Troubled Past

Brown served in the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2005 as an armor crewman, including a deployment to Iraq. He later served in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to 2009, leaving the military with the rank of sergeant. Friends and family say he struggled with severe mental illness for years, with some citing untreated post-traumatic stress disorder.
