Are Montanans About To See Joann Fabrics Make a Big Return?
If you ever wandered the aisles of Joann Fabrics, you probably felt that familiar tug of inspiration: the bolts of fabric calling your name, the walls of yarn begging to be turned into something cozy, the endless supplies for quilting, sewing, and crafting. Then, the store closed and for many it was more than losing a place to shop, it felt like losing a creative anchor, a gathering point, a piece of our crafting identity.
Michaels Buys Joann Brand and Brings It Back to Montana
Here’s the twist: Joann isn’t gone for good. In mid 2025, Michaels acquired Joann’s intellectual property and private label brands. That means Joann as a stand alone store is mostly history, but the name and the products we loved are being reimagined inside Michaels stores as part of a “store-within-a-store” concept.
Michaels Expands With New ‘Knit & Sew Shop’ Sections
One of the new rollouts is called The Knit & Sew Shop, a dedicated section inside Michaels that showcases Joann brands like Big Twist yarn alongside Michaels’ own inventory and other well known sewing names. Michaels is carving out about 25 percent more floor space for fabric, yarn, and sewing supplies to meet growing demand. Even better, new fabric cutting tables and expanded in store services, sometimes referred to as “Cut Bars,” are planned for more than 650 Michaels locations nationwide by mid October.

On top of that, Michaels is also debuting The Party Shop concept, which brings event supplies, custom balloons, and party décor under one roof. It’s part of a broader strategy to become a go to destination not just for crafting, but also for celebrations.
Joann Favorites Returning to Michaels Stores Across Montana
For Montana crafters, this could be very good news. While we won’t see Joann stores reopening as they once were, Michaels locations across the country, and here in Montana, are being outfitted with Joann-branded “Knit & Sew Shop” sections. That means the fabrics, yarn, and specialty supplies many of us thought were gone for good could soon be back, just in a different setting.
Michaels has announced it’s adding hundreds of new fabric, sewing, and quilting products, increasing its yarn selection by 25 percent, and even bringing in sewing machines and advanced cutting services. For crafters Montana this could mean easier access to the supplies we’ve been missing, without having to rely on shipping delays or long drives.

A Gradual Reintroduction of Joann in Michaels Stores
It may not be identical to the Joann we remember, but the new “Knit & Sew Shop” inside Michaels brings fresh possibilities. Each location will look a little different. Some may start small with yarn and sewing basics, while others will grow into fuller Joann style spaces. Instead of thinking of it as a replacement, consider it a new chapter. The brand isn’t gone; it’s evolving, and this gradual reintroduction means Joann’s spirit is still with us, just in a refreshed form.
