Montana just earned some bragging rights in higher education. Forbes released its list of America’s Top Colleges, and two Montana schools landed spots. Montana State University ranked #345, while Montana Technological University came in at #454.

How Forbes Decides the Rankings

This isn’t a popularity contest. Forbes looks at key factors like alumni salaries, student debt, graduation and retention rates, and even whether graduates are featured on other Forbes lists like “30 Under 30.” The focus is less about earning a diploma and more about what that diploma leads to.

Montana State University Grads Balance Low Debt With Strong Earnings

For MSU, the numbers speak volumes. Graduates leave with an average debt of $9,510, lower than many national averages. And over time, that degree pays off. After 20 years, Bobcat alumni earn a median salary of $116,500.

Montana Tech Ranks High With Top Alumni Salaries

Montana Tech also made the cut, showing why it has a strong reputation in engineering and applied sciences. Ranked #454, the university stands out for its alumni earnings. After 20 years, Oredigger graduates bring in a median salary of $125,500, outpacing MSU in long-term income potential.

Affordable Degrees: Montana Tech Keeps Student Debt Low

Debt plays a big role in the Forbes formula. Montana Tech students graduate with an average of $5,999 in debt, significantly lower than MSU’s $9,510. For comparison, similar institutions on the list show Colorado School of Mines at $9,759 and South Dakota School of Mines at $7,924. That makes Montana Tech one of the more affordable pathways to a solid career.
