Winter Storm Watch Posted for Billings and Surrounding Areas
Winter might not officially arrive until later this month, but it's decided to give us a familiar little nudge, like, “Get ready, I’m on my way.” And even though we’ve lived through enough winters to write a whole book about them, the first or second (or honestly, even third) real storm of the season always manages to throw everyone off their game.
A Little Patience Goes a Long Way During Winter Travel
With the storm on the way, it’s a good time to remind ourselves to be patient. That person going slower than you think they should? They might be a brand new driver still learning. They could be a parent with their baby in the backseat. Or maybe it’s one of our older neighbors who has to make a grocery run or get to an appointment and doesn’t have the luxury of staying home.
We never really know someone’s story on the road, so giving each other a little grace can go a long way. And if you see someone stuck or struggling and you’re in a place to help, well, that’s kind of what Montanans do best.

Winter Storm Watch Issued for Much of South Central Montana
The National Weather Service in Billings has issued a Winter Storm Watch beginning tomorrow afternoon and stretching into Saturday morning. It covers a wide area: Billings, Laurel, Absarokee, Columbus, Big Timber, Melville, Harlowton, Judith Gap, and several more of our communities.
Forecast Calls for Several Inches of Snow
Right now, forecasters are calling for the possibility of heavy snow, somewhere between four and nine inches of snow, depending on where you’re located. That’s enough to make roads messy and change your plans if you’re not paying attention.
Sudden Freeze May Make Roads Dangerous Quickly
What has everyone watching this system is the drop in temperature expected tomorrow afternoon. As that cold air sweeps in, any moisture on the roads could freeze fast. We’re talking a potential flash freeze, which can turn what looks like a normal road into a skating rink in minutes. By the end of the workday tomorrow evening, driving could get pretty rough.
Expect Slower, Slicker Travel by Tomorrow Afternoon
If you need to be out tomorrow afternoon or evening, it’s probably a good idea to build in extra time or just shift plans if you can. Roads may get slick quickly, and visibility will likely go downhill as the snow picks up.
Why It’s Important to Check for Forecast Changes
This storm is still a day away, so details can shift. The National Weather Service will keep adjusting the forecast, and it’s worth checking in now, and then so you know exactly what you’re heading into. A little preparation beats being surprised on the highway.

A Practical Reminder as Winter Returns
We’ve done winter before, and we’ll do it again. And getting through it starts with looking out for one another. Be patient, be kind, and remember that we’re all just trying to get where we’re going in one piece. The storm may be coming tomorrow, but today is the perfect time to get ready for it, together.
