Montana Just Revealed Its New Driver’s License, and Wow!
If you’ve been carrying around the same Montana license for years, things are about to look a little different. The Montana Motor Vehicle Division has officially rolled out an all-new driver's license and ID design, and it’s not just a facelift; it’s one of the most secure credentials in the entire country.
The new cards start rolling out this month, but don’t worry. Your current license is still valid until it expires, so you don’t need to rush to the MVD tomorrow.
Why Montana Decided to Update the License
Identity theft and driver's license fraud have become bigger issues nationwide, and Montana decided it was time to get ahead of the problem. According to MVD Administrator Laurie Bakri, the goal was simple: give Montanans stronger protection and bring our state’s credentials into a more modern era. It’s been almost ten years since the last redesign, so this update is a pretty big leap forward.
A License Built With Security in Mind
These new cards are not easy to duplicate, and that’s the point. The updated Montana license is made from long-lasting polycarbonate, the same material used in some of the world’s most secure IDs. But the real magic is in the details:
• Black and white laser-engraved images
• Multi-color ink
• Color-shifting elements
• Ultraviolet security designs
• Raised tactile features
All of this makes the card extremely tough to counterfeit. Plus, Montana added encoded one- and two-dimensional barcodes and new security backgrounds to help stop fraud before it starts.
New License Icons That Tell Your Story
Your new Montana license can show up to three different icons, depending on your choices and eligibility:
• White star in a black circle: You’ve got a REAL ID
• Black eagle in flight: Indicates U.S. citizenship
• Black heart with a Y: Organ donor designation
These symbols make important information easier to verify while still keeping your personal details secure.
Familiar Landmarks, Modern Look
Even though the design is more secure, Montana didn’t lose its sense of place. The background features recognizable landmarks that feel ours uniquely, a nod to home, even as the technology behind the card moves forward.
When You’ll Get a New License
The new design will be issued starting this month. If your current license isn’t expiring anytime soon, don’t stress. You’ll automatically get the updated version the next time you renew or replace your card.

How to Schedule Your Renewal
