The Absarokee community is rallying together to save a true local landmark - the Sandstone School.

Built over a century ago in 1910, this school isn’t just a building. It’s a piece of Montana history, one of the first purpose-built schools in the region and a symbol of community spirit and education.

A Historic Gem with Deep Roots

The Sandstone School earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1986. It’s one of the early Montana buildings recognized for its unique architecture and historical significance, and it still stands today with its original charm intact.

The sandstone used to build it came straight from the Montana Sandstone Company in Columbus, the same stone used for the Montana State Capitol in Helena.

Back when Absarokee was just starting to grow, the people knew education mattered. They came together to build this school, lending hands and hearts to the project. It opened its doors in November 1910, welcoming kids from first through eighth grade.

Why Saving the Sandstone Matters

The Sandstone School isn’t just any old building, it’s one of only three sandstone structures left in the area, and it’s uniquely aligned perfectly right in the heart of town. This makes it a rare and special part of Absarokee’s heritage.

More than that, it’s a symbol of the community’s early dedication to education and growth. Losing it would mean losing a tangible connection to the town’s roots.

A Vision for the Future

Saving the Sandstone School isn’t just about preserving the past, it’s about investing in Absarokee’s future. Plans are already in place to transform the building into a much needed day care and learning center. This will help fill a critical gap in the community by providing early childhood education right on the historic grounds.

But it doesn’t stop there. The vision includes adult education programs and expanded learning opportunities for all ages. Imagine a restored Sandstone School buzzing with activity, kids learning, adults growing, and the whole community coming together to learn and thrive.

How You Can Help

This ambitious vision needs support to become a reality. The Sandstone Preservation Community has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for restoration and improvements.

By donating, you’re not just helping to save a beautiful historic building, you’re investing in a place that will nurture education and community for generations to come. Your support means helping create a vital resource for Absarokee’s families, now and in the future.
