Farewell, Doodles: ZooMontana Says Goodbye to Beloved Red Panda
In 2015, a young red panda named Duli, affectionately known as Doodles, made the journey from the Lincoln Children’s Zoo in Nebraska to his new home at ZooMontana.
At just four years old, Duli arrived with wide eyes and a curious spirit, quickly settling into his Montana habitat. Over the next ten years, Duli became more than just a resident of the zoo, he became a beloved part of the ZooMontana family.
A Quiet but Powerful Presence
Red pandas are known for their gentle demeanor, and Duli was no exception. With his soft rust-colored fur, bushy tail, and endearing personality, he became a favorite among visitors and staff alike.
For many who stopped by, seeing Duli curled up in a tree branch or munching on bamboo became a special part of their zoo experience. He had a quiet way of connecting with people, leaving a lasting impression without ever making a sound.
Shifting Gears to Geriatric Care
In recent years, the zookeepers began to notice a change. Duli’s energy had slowed, and his days were filled with longer naps and a more relaxed pace. Understanding the needs of aging animals, ZooMontana’s Care Team began providing specialized geriatric care tailored just for him.

Duli was surrounded by love and attention, treated to cold laser therapy to ease his aging joints and given his favorite foods, especially generous servings of bamboo. These weren’t just efforts to maintain his health, but heartfelt gestures from a team that loved him deeply.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Duli celebrated his 14th birthday on July 5th, a meaningful milestone for red pandas in human care. Just five days later, the ZooMontana team faced the painful reality that his body was beginning to fail him.
\With heavy hearts and deep compassion, the decision was made to humanely euthanize Duli on July 10th due to age related complications and concerns about his quality of life. It was a difficult day for everyone who knew him, but also a moment filled with gratitude for the time they shared.
A Legacy of Love and Connection
Duli may have been a small creature, but the space he leaves behind feels immense. For the ZooMontana staff, he was a daily joy and a gentle soul. For guests, he was often the highlight of their visit, a photo opportunity, a smile, a memory. The zoo is quieter now, but Duli’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Thank You, Duli
ZooMontana shared their gratitude for the years they were able to care for Duli and for the opportunity to share him with the community. He reminded everyone who met him of the quiet power of connection and the importance of compassion. Farewell, sweet Doodles. You were truly one of a kind.
