Construction is underway on the long-anticipated Zoo Drive Improvements project in Billings. Led by the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), the project aims to significantly improve traffic operations and enhance safety features along one of the city's busiest corridors.

The work zone spans Zoo Drive from Shiloh Road to South Frontage Road and will bring a range of upgrades for both drivers and pedestrians. Here’s what’s happening and what you should expect over the coming months.

A Safer, Smarter Roadway

The centerpiece of the project is a full reconfiguration of Zoo Drive. When finished, the corridor will be widened into a five-lane roadway, including two lanes in each direction and a center turn lane. A similar transformation is planned for a section of Gabel Road between Circle K and the intersection with Zoo Drive. That stretch will be expanded to four southbound lanes, including a second left-turn lane from Gabel onto Zoo Drive heading toward I-90.

The goal is to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and reduce the potential for accidents in this high-traffic area. Intersection and traffic signal upgrades will support that goal, as will new pavement markings, reconfigured medians, and wider I-90 ramps.

Accessibility and Multi-Use Upgrades

In addition to improving driving conditions, MDT is taking steps to make the area safer and more accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project includes the addition of new sidewalk connections and upgrades to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. These improvements are designed to offer better access and connectivity throughout the corridor for all users.

Work Already Underway

Construction crews are currently focused on the eastern end of Zoo Drive, near the I-90 on- and off-ramps. Underground electrical work is in progress and will continue in the coming weeks along Zoo Drive, Pierce Parkway, and Gabel Road. This utility work is necessary groundwork ahead of the larger infrastructure improvements to come.

Median modifications are also happening now, both on Zoo Drive and at the Shiloh Road roundabout. Work at the roundabout is expected to wrap up by the end of this week.

What Drivers Should Know

As with any major road project, there will be some travel impacts. Single-lane traffic is active in work zones, and drivers should expect minor delays. Use caution, slow down, and stay alert for crews working near the roadway.

If you’re traveling on foot, be aware that the sidewalk along the north side of Zoo Drive will remain closed for the duration of the project. Please plan alternate routes.

Timeline and Contractor Info

MDT has selected Knife River as the primary contractor for this major undertaking. Construction is expected to continue through the summer, with final completion anticipated in fall 2025.
