In Yellowstone County's Riverside County Cemetery is a cremation garden where stories come to rest, stories of lives once lived, but for whom no family or fortune remains.

These are the neighbors who may have walked beside us, unnoticed but no less important. Now, Yellowstone County is preparing to lay them to rest with dignity, compassion, and the solemn respect every soul deserves.

A Ceremony of Heart, Not History

On Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., the Yellowstone County Board of Commissioners will hold a burial service for 48 individuals, each a person who passed without loved ones or financial means. Though no relatives will be present to grieve, the county ensures they are not forgotten. This ceremony is not just about burial. It’s about bearing witness. It's about saying: You mattered.

A Garden of Peace for Those Without

The cremation garden stands as a symbol of community compassion, of a promise that no one in Yellowstone County will ever be discarded or unseen, regardless of their circumstances. Here, the remains of those who have no one left will be inurned with the same care and tenderness as anyone else.

A Call for Kindness: Volunteers Needed

In what may be one of the most selfless acts of community service, the County is calling on volunteers to help carry the urns to their final resting places. Each urn represents a life. Each step taken is a small but powerful gesture of honor. This is not a job, it is a calling to uphold the sacredness of human life, to say a final goodbye on behalf of all of us.

You Can Help Write the Final Chapter

If you feel moved to participate or want to learn more, please contact the Yellowstone County Commissioners' office at 406-256-2701. Your presence could provide the love and remembrance that these individuals no longer have family or finances to offer.

Everyone Deserves to Be Remembered

This ceremony reminds us that community is not just about the people we know; it’s about the people we’ve never met, too. In this moment, Yellowstone County becomes a family for the forgotten. And in doing so, we uphold the most human of values: that no life goes unnoticed, and no death is met with silence.
