As a homeschool family, we're constantly looking for ways to turn everyday experiences into something educational. Sometimes that means a lesson in the kitchen or a project in the backyard, and other times, it means packing up for a mini road trip. So when we had a few open days to travel, we headed to Helena with one big goal in mind, showing our son the Montana State Capitol in person. If you've never been, or even if it’s been a while, I’m telling you, this place is worth the stop.

Why the Capitol Matters (Even to a 10-Year-Old)

From the outside, the Montana State Capitol is impressive, with its giant dome and stately architecture. But inside, it’s so much more than just a beautiful building. Since 1902, it’s been the center of Montana’s political heartbeat. This is where the state’s biggest decisions have been made, and continue to be made. It’s where history is preserved, and where history is still being written. Standing in the Rotunda, looking up at the murals and bronze statues, it hits you just how much has happened inside those walls.

Easy to Visit

The Capitol is located at 1301 East 6th Avenue in Helena and is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (except Christmas and New Year’s Day). You don’t need a reservation to explore on your own. Just stop at the first floor information desk and grab a self guided tour booklet. They even have a kid friendly scavenger hunt led by Lewis and Clark’s Newfoundland dog, Seaman, which added a fun and interactive twist for our son.

Want a Tour? They've Got You Covered

If you’re more of a guided tour kind of person, the Montana Historical Society offers walk throughs that start from that same info desk. Summer tour times run June through mid-September with options almost every day. Tours are free and last about an hour. Can’t make it in person? There’s a virtual tour and a 43-minute video that gives you a pretty solid walk through from the comfort of home.

The Capitol Has a Story to Tell

We used our visit as a deep dive into Montana history, and the Capitol’s timeline didn’t disappoint. From Helena winning the fight to become the capital in 1894, to the cornerstone being laid in 1899, to the Capitol’s dedication on July 4, 1902, it’s amazing how much went into creating the place that now anchors state government. You’ll learn about murals from famous artists like Charles M. Russell, renovations, earthquake damage, and even political scandals during the original construction. It’s the kind of stuff that brings textbooks to life.

Don't Skip These Hidden Gems

Beyond the main tour, you can explore the Governor’s Reception Room and the Hall of Governors on the second floor when they’re not in use. There's also the original Governor’s Mansion just a short distance away at 304 North Ewing. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday in the summer with tours on the hour starting at noon. We didn’t make it to the mansion this time, but it’s already on our list for next time.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

Here’s what we learned:

  • Get there early to find parking because spots fill up fast.
  • Pack light because there’s nowhere to stash bags inside.
  • Remind your kids this is a working government building, so quiet voices and respectful behavior go a long way.
  • Bring a camera. The dome murals, the Rotunda, and even the grand staircase are fantastic photo ops.
