Walking the Bridge: A Symbol of Hope for Veterans in Billings
In Billings, a local project called #WalkTheBridge was started to raise awareness about veteran suicide and show support to veterans and active military members.
The event involves a meaningful walk of 2.2 miles on the 22nd day of every month at 6:00 p.m. It honors the 22 veterans who pass away daily because of their struggles. By gathering each month, participants show support and unity for veterans, emphasizing that they are not alone in their challenges.
Beyond honoring those lost to suicide, #WalkTheBridge also hopes to provide comfort to the families and loved ones left behind, offering a space for remembrance and reflection.
The next #WalkTheBridge event will be held at Swords Park Rims Overlook on Wednesday, January 22, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event is open to everyone who wants to support veterans and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in the military community.
The Adaptive Performance Center in Billings, a non-profit facility dedicated to serving veterans and military personnel, has set a goal of having 100 participants walk together each month. This initiative signifies a collective effort to foster a strong support network and promote mental well-being among veterans and the military community.
Given how important it is to address veteran suicide rates, it's important to understand the concerning statistics in Montana. Data from the Legislative Audit Division of the Montana State Legislature shows that the veteran suicide rate in the state is a serious issue that needs attention.
By taking part in events like #WalkTheBridge and helping organizations like the Adaptive Performance Center, communities can play a big part in making people more aware, providing support, and fighting against the stigma related to mental health challenges among veterans.
