Where Does Montana Rank When It Comes to Dangerous Rural Driving?
A new study revealed which states are the most dangerous for driving in rural areas. Wyoming was ranked as the most risky, with Montana following closely behind.
The data was analyzed using information from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to determine the number of rural crash fatalities for each state in 2022.
Ranking of States
As mentioned, Wyoming takes the lead with 19.76 rural crash fatalities per 100,000 residents, reflecting a total of 134 crash fatalities, of which 85.07% occurred in rural areas.
Following closely behind, Mississippi ranks second, recording 15.87 rural crash fatalities per 100,000 residents, with 66.86% of all crash fatalities happening in rural areas.
Montana has the third highest rate, with 15.49 rural crash fatalities per 100,000 residents, making up 78.87% of all recorded crash fatalities in the state.
Understanding the Data
The study used data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in which they looked at how many people died in car crashes in each state and compared it to the population to figure out how many people died per 100,000 residents in rural areas. They used this information to make a list ranking the states with the highest rates of car crash deaths in rural areas.
The results of this study show that it's really important to know about the dangers of driving in rural areas and it emphasizes the need for more safety measures to keep both locals and visitors safe.

With Montana being ranked as the third most dangerous state for driving in rural areas, it's something that we need to be aware of so we can make sure that we don't become part of the statistic.
