Just weeks before the inaugural Rodeo Billings event kicks off at MetraPark, organizers have announced that the 2025 rodeo will be dedicated to the late Yellowstone County Commissioner John Ostlund. Each evening of Rodeo Billings will honor Ostlund’s legacy, recognizing his role in making the new outdoor arena a reality.

Ostlund Championed the Outdoor Arena Project

The new outdoor venue, which will host Rodeo Billings, was a longtime vision of Commissioner Ostlund. He was instrumental in pushing the project forward, with his efforts culminating in the return of outdoor rodeo to Billings for the first time in years. Ostlund began serving Yellowstone County in 2002 and was in his sixth term when he tragically died in a plane crash near Blue Creek Road on June 19.

A Lasting Legacy in Agriculture and Community Support

You would be hard-pressed to find a better friend of agriculture or stronger supporter of our western way of life than John Ostlund,” said Bobby Millier, president of the NILE Board of Directors. Millier credited Ostlund’s leadership and vision for the arena’s successful construction. “Without John’s support, this project wouldn’t have happened,” he added.

Tribute to Include Riderless Horse and Announcer Memorial

During the rodeo performances on August 14, 15, and 16, Commissioner Ostlund will be honored with a traditional tribute. A riderless horse will be led into the arena each evening, and iconic rodeo announcer Bob Tallman will share a special memorial to Ostlund at the start of each night’s performance at 7 p.m.

NILE General Manager Reflects on Ostlund’s Passion

David Allen, general manager of the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE), reflected on the bittersweet timing of the dedication. “It is ironic that John, who was so passionate about this project, won’t be with us to celebrate at Rodeo Billings,” Allen said. “We know he’ll be with us in spirit and we hope to bestow honor upon his service and contributions to our county.
