Billings Rodeo Returns With Packed Stands, Perfect Weather, and Unforgettable Moments
If Thursday night’s kickoff to Rodeo Billings was any clue, this weekend is going to be one for the memory books.
The brand-new outdoor arena at MetraPark was buzzing long before the first event began. Families carried bags of popcorn, friends swapped stories in the stands, and first time visitors snapped photos under a sky painted with the soft colors of a late summer sunset. After a stretch of sweltering days, the cool breeze felt like a gift. Billings had been waiting for rodeo to return, and judging by the near-capacity crowd, the wait was worth it.
A Tribute That Touched Every Heart
Under the glow of the big sky, a riderless horse stepped onto the dirt. Legendary rodeo announcer Bob Tallman’s voice carried through the stands as he paid tribute to the late Yellowstone County Commissioner John Ostlund, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash on June 19. It was a moment heavy with emotion, a reminder that rodeo isn’t just a sport, it’s a community, and when one member is lost, everyone feels it.
Young Talent in the Spotlight
Opening night wasn’t just about the pros, it belonged to the future. The High School Showcase, presented by Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative, handed the reins to young rodeo athletes ready to prove themselves. The crowd roared for barrel racers who flew around the barrels with precision and for bull riders whose grit seemed far beyond their years. It was more than competition, it was a promise that the spirit of rodeo is alive and kicking for generations to come.
The Celebration Rolls On
The weekend’s just getting warmed up. Friday brings Military and Patriot Night, honoring those who serve our country. Saturday turns the spotlight to Billings Clinic Pink Night, raising awareness for breast cancer while keeping the energy high in the arena.

Gates open at 6 p.m. both nights, and here’s the bonus, your rodeo ticket also gets you into MontanaFair, so you can spend the day soaking up everything the fairgrounds have to offer before settling in for a night of rodeo action.
Why Rodeo Billings Stands Out
This isn’t just another rodeo on the calendar. Produced by the Northern International Livestock Exposition, Rodeo Billings brings top tier riders, powerhouse bucking stock, and the perfect timing for athletes chasing points toward the National Finals Rodeo. In just one weekend it’s become one of the most sought, after wins in the PRCA season, and it’s happening right here in Billings.
Back Where It Belongs
It’s been nearly a decade since MontanaFair last hosted an outdoor rodeo, and NILE President Bobby Miller says bringing it back was long overdue. Moving the event from October to August gives it that nostalgic “hot August nights” feel, and the new MetraPark outdoor arena sets the stage perfectly. From honoring Native American culture to showcasing Montana talent in key roles, and adding prize money to sweeten the competition, it’s a homecoming worth celebrating.

Under the Big Sky Together
With two more nights of heart pounding action ahead, Rodeo Billings is proving it’s more than just an event, it’s a story this town will be telling long after the last bull bucks.
