The Yellowstone County Commissioners have confirmed the tragic death of longtime Commissioner John Ostlund, who passed away on June 19, 2025, in a plane crash near Billings.

In a statement issued by the board, Ostlund was remembered not only as a colleague but as a friend. “John died doing what he loved, flying his airplane,” the Commissioners shared.

County Operations Will Continue

Despite this unexpected loss, county business will carry on as planned. Budget hearings scheduled for next week will proceed with a board quorum in place. Officials have emphasized that the daily functions and responsibilities of the County Commissioners’ office remain active and steady during this time of mourning.

Process Underway to Fill Ostlund’s Seat

The County Commissioners are now taking the necessary steps to fill the District #1 vacancy left by Ostlund’s passing. In accordance with protocol, only individuals who have lived in District #1 for at least two years will be considered. See what areas fall into the Yellowstone County Commissioner Districts here.
