Authorities say a Red Lodge man under investigation for drug activity has now admitted to a much more serious crime involving children.

Man Pleads Guilty and Faces Lengthy Prison Sentence

Jeremy Dean Ruby, 50, has pleaded guilty to possessing illegal material involving minors. He could face up to 20 years in prison, along with a fine of up to $250,000 and a lengthy period of supervised release.

Sentencing Scheduled as Defendant Remains in Custody

The case is being handled by U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters. Sentencing is scheduled for August 26, 2026. Ruby remains in custody.

Case Began as Drug Investigation in 2024

According to investigators, the case began as part of a drug investigation between July 2024 and March 2025. On March 20, 2025, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Ruby’s home and seized his cell phone.

Search of Phone Reveals Hundreds of Illegal Images

About a week later, authorities say they searched the device and found hundreds of images and videos involving minors, with victims ranging in age from two to 12. Investigators also found evidence that suggested ongoing interest in this type of material, including the use of file-sharing programs.

Recorded Jail Calls Point to Awareness of Evidence

In recorded jail calls after the search, officials say Ruby made comments indicating he was aware of the digital evidence and wanted it removed.

Federal and Local Agencies Led the Investigation

Assistant U.S. Attorney Zeno Baucus is prosecuting the case, with the investigation led by the FBI and the Red Lodge Police Department.
