Montana Veterans To Share Their Untold Stories
The Patton Veterans Project (PVP), in partnership with the Veterans Navigation Network (VNN) and Montana State University Billings' Military and Veterans Success Center, is excited to announce a special free community film screening event.
Taking place on Thursday, April 10th at 6 p.m. at Montana State University – Billings, Lecture Hall LI 148 (Library Building), this event invites the public to witness short films created by Montana veterans. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a pre-screening meet-up, with a reception to follow. The event is free for all to attend and promises an evening of powerful storytelling and reflection.
Empowering Billings Veterans Through Film
Dubbed the “I Was There Film Workshop,” this screening marks the culmination of a transformative weekend workshop that took place from February 28 to March 2, 2025, at VNN. Facilitated by PVP, the workshop provided veterans with the tools and guidance to translate their personal experiences of service and transition into short films.
Leading voices of the project, such as Ben Patton, emphasized the communicative power of film as a universal language that bridges gaps and connects us all. With over 1,500 veterans benefiting from PVP's workshops, the impact of storytelling through film continues to grow.
A Platform for Healing and Connection
Mike McManus, Program Manager of VNN, highlighted the workshop as more than just a film program. It served as a safe space where veterans could express their lived experiences through art, reflection, and solidarity.
The films created during the workshop are described as raw, honest, and deeply moving, offering a glimpse into the untold stories of veterans—stories of trauma, growth, and resilience that are often challenging to share in traditional therapeutic settings.
By providing a creative outlet and fostering a community of support, the workshop not only promotes healing but also reaffirms the strength and complexity of those who have served.

An Evening of Inspiration
This screening event is an invitation to the public to come together and appreciate the bravery and creativity of Montana's veterans. By attending, you’ll not only witness compelling storytelling but also contribute to a sense of understanding and unity within the Billings community.
