If you’ve got a kid who lights up when they step onto a wrestling mat, you’re in the right place. A new study looked at wrestling participation across the country, and the results paint a pretty exciting picture for Montana families. We may not have taken the number one spot on the list, but make no mistake… this is absolutely one of the best states for young wrestlers to grow, compete, and chase big dreams.

Where Wrestling Participation Is Highest in the U.S.

The study dug into data from the National Federation of State High School Associations and compared how many high school athletes in each state are wrestling. Alaska came out swinging in the top spot, with a whopping 7.80 percent of high school athletes involved in the sport. Nebraska and Wyoming claimed second and third. Vermont, on the other hand, barely dipped a toe onto the mat with only 0.22 percent.

Montana’s Wrestling Community Is Bigger Than You Think

Montana landed in seventh place, and that’s something to feel really good about. Out of 33,161 students involved in high school athletics here, more than 2,000 are wrestlers. That includes 1,559 boys and 459 girls, which says a whole lot about how inclusive and competitive the sport has become across the state.

Think about that for a second. Over six percent of all high school athletes in Montana choose wrestling. That’s not a small number. That’s a thriving community.

How Montana’s Culture Builds Tough Athletes

You already know this if you’ve sat in the stands at a high school meet, but Montana has a special kind of grit. Kids here grow up tough. They grow up competitive. And they grow up knowing how to push through challenges. Wrestling fits that mindset like it was made for it.

Combine that with packed gyms, strong school programs, coaches who genuinely care, and communities that show up, and you’ve got a recipe for some seriously strong athletes.

Montana Holds Its Own Against Wrestling Powerhouses

Montana sits just behind states like Idaho, Iowa, and Kansas, all of which are known wrestling hotspots. Those states have slightly higher percentages, but Montana’s numbers hold their own against much larger populations. When you factor in the size of our state and how spread out our communities are, the participation level here is even more impressive.

More Kids Than Ever Are Hitting the Mat in Montana

Girls’ wrestling keeps gaining momentum every single year. More families are getting their kids on the mat earlier, and more schools are stepping up with real opportunities to compete at higher levels. For a state our size, that kind of growth is huge.

And if your child is dreaming big, whether it’s a college program or even a WWE-style spotlight someday, Montana gives them a solid foundation to start climbing.

Why Montana Kids Have a Real Shot at Wrestling Greatness

If your kid loves wrestling, cheer them on, because they’re in one of the best places in the country to chase that passion. Montana’s wrestling community is strong, welcoming, and packed with opportunity. Seventh place on a national list might not sound flashy at first, but once you dig in, it’s clear we’re punching well above our weight.

And who knows? With the way things are growing, the next big wrestling superstar could easily come from right here under the Big Sky.
