Dangers In Paradise: Tropical Travel Advisory For Montana Tourists

Sand, sun, surf, and…sexual assault? That’s not exactly what we want to think about when planning a trip to a tropical paradise, but the United States government is warning residents of Montana that we may want to re-think traveling to one tropical location for the time being.

Montana residents are being advised by the United States government to be extra cautious when considering a trip to the Bahamas. The government hasn’t banned travel to the Bahamas, but they want to make sure that Montanans are aware of what we may face if we do go there.

The advisory warns of a rise in violent crimes, such as armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults, which are prevalent throughout the country, particularly in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and the Grand Bahama islands.

Boating Dangers and Watercraft Risks

Montana residents need to be aware that boating in the Bahamas is not closely regulated, leading to accidents, deaths, and instances of sexual assault by jet ski operators.

The U.S. government is so concerned that it has prohibited its employees from using jet skis rented from independent operators on certain islands due to safety concerns. A warning has also been issued that some watercraft operators may not be licensed or insured, disregarding weather warnings and creating even more risks.

Beach Safety Concerns and Firearms Restrictions

Beach safety is important because there have been reports of sexual assaults, accidents with watercraft, and people getting hurt or even dying by pushing themselves too hard. Also, it's important to know that having guns or bullets in the Bahamas is against the law, and people who break this rule can get arrested, go to jail, and be fined heavily.

Safety Measures and Precautions

Montana residents are strongly recommended to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for emergency support and updates from the U.S. Embassy. Making sure that you have travel insurance before going to the Bahamas is also strongly encouraged.
