Sometimes the best trips start with the simplest ideas. For my family, the adventure to Coeur d’Alene began with my son craving an authentic Idaho potato, freshly pulled from the ground. That little mission turned into one of the most beautiful drives we’ve taken and a visit to a town that’s as charming as it is memorable.

Getting to Coeur d'Alene was half the fun. We wound our way through the western side of Montana, and the views were breathtaking. Rolling hills, stretches of forest, and mountain peaks made the hours fly by. Even our son, who sometimes gets a little restless on road trips, was caught staring out the window, pointing out rivers and cliffs to my husband and me.

Our quest for a true Idaho potato was what sparked this whole adventure. While we didn’t stumble upon a farmer pulling them out of the ground that very second, just knowing we were in potato country gave us a laugh. It became a running joke with John, who kept asking if every field we passed was “the one.”

While Coeur d’Alene is known for all sorts of outdoor activities, from boating to hiking, we kept our visit simple. We made a must do stop at Trader Joe’s because when you don’t have one nearby, stocking up feels like an event all its own.

Then, we stumbled into the cutest farmers market. Fresh produce, handmade goods, and the friendliest vendors made it worth every minute. It was small-town charm wrapped in baskets of flowers and jars of local honey. Oh, and that's where we found the authentic potato for my son, freshly pulled from the ground that very morning and still covered in dirt.

Discovering the Beauty of Lake Coeur d’Alene

The heart of Coeur d’Alene is the lake, and it’s every bit as stunning as people say. The water sparkled under the sun, framed by trees and mountains in the distance. We didn’t rent boats or jump in this time, but just walking along the water’s edge felt restorative. There’s something about a lake town that slows a person down in the best way.

Beyond the lake, Coeur d'Alene itself feels cozy and welcoming. Streets lined with local shops and cafés gave us plenty to wander through. Even though we only had a short visit, we could see why people fall in love with this spot because it’s a mix of natural beauty and small town heart that can sometimes feel rare these days.

Why Coeur d’Alene Is Worth a Return Trip

We may have gone in search of a potato, but we found so much more. Coeur d’Alene gave us a beautiful drive, peaceful lake views, and a taste of local life we weren’t expecting. Next time, we’ll plan to stay longer and dive into more of the outdoor fun. But even on this quick trip, we knew one thing for sure: Coeur d’Alene is worth every mile to get there.
