It was the kind of morning that almost felt magical. The sun rose over a crisp, clear sky, and on the East Coast, people were heading to work, grabbing coffee, starting their days without the slightest inkling that everything was about to change.

Where Were You on September 11?

Most of us remember exactly where we were on September 11, 2001. Whether we were watching from a classroom, waking up to the news, or hearing it on the radio, the shock was instant and lasting. Even here in Montana, thousands of miles from New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the ripple effect hit hard and fast.

The First Impact, Then the Second

At 8:46 a.m., the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Just 17 minutes later, a second plane hit the South Tower. The world stood still. We were watching a coordinated attack unfold in real time, and we didn’t yet know how many more were coming.

Then came the Pentagon.

Then came the field in Pennsylvania.

And Then Came the Heartbreak

Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day. People with families, people chasing dreams, people just doing their jobs. And in the years since, many more have died as a result of the toxic aftermath. But what stands out the most is the unity we felt. In the face of unimaginable tragedy, neighbors came together, strangers helped strangers, and the American spirit was tested and it held strong.

Why We Still Remember

This isn’t just something for history books. It’s something we carry with us. It's the reason airport security looks different. It’s why some of us still feel a small jolt of anxiety before boarding a plane. It’s why we pause every year on this date and remember.

Take a Moment, Montana

So on September 11, wherever you are, take a moment. Reflect. Talk to your kids. Share where you were, what you saw, and how it felt. Because remembering isn’t just about looking back. It’s about making sure we never forget how fragile life is, and how strong we are when we face darkness together.
