Land Board Greenlights $1.7 Million to Support Montana Schools
Montana’s public schools are set to receive a major funding boost after the Montana Land Board approved roughly $1.7 million in revenue during its latest meeting. The decision highlights the Board’s ongoing commitment to using state trust lands to directly benefit students and classrooms across the state.
Auditor James Brown: “This Is Real Impact for Real Students”
Commissioner of Securities and Insurance James Brown, who serves on the Land Board, praised the approval and emphasized the results of careful, responsible land management. “The five members of the Land Board…have once again demonstrated how responsible stewardship of Montana’s trust lands delivers real results for our schools,” he said.
Where the Money’s Coming From: A Diverse Mix of Land Revenues
This month’s revenue comes from a variety of land use activities. The largest portion,$580,000, came from communization agreements, followed by timber sales, cabin leases, oil and gas leases, and easements. These varied sources show how broad and strategic land management helps support critical education funding.
Montana’s Constitution in Action
The Land Board’s mission is rooted in Montana’s Constitution, which calls for income from state trust lands to benefit public schools. With over 5.2 million acres under its care, the Board is delivering on that promise, generating revenue while maintaining the state’s natural resources for future generations.

Brown also emphasized transparency and accountability in how these lands are managed. He thanked the other Board members and the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation staff for their efforts to make sure every dollar is put to good use for Montana students.
Smart Land Use Means a Stronger Future
Brown says that this funding decision isn’t just about today, it’s about building long-term value for the state. Each dollar approved helps strengthen Montana’s communities through better schools, better opportunities, and a better future for the next generation.
