From Training to Trooper: Pay and Path Ahead
If you’re brand new to law enforcement, you’ll start with the Montana Law Enforcement Academy in Helena and then move on to the MHP Advanced Academy in Boulder. Already experienced? Lateral candidates have a shorter path with specialized training.

While you’re in training, you’re already considered a State of Montana employee with pay starting at $28.24 per hour, plus benefits. Once you’re sworn in as a Trooper, the starting wage bumps to $30.98 an hour, and it only grows from there.
