If you’ve noticed filling up your tank doesn’t feel quite as painful as it did a few weeks ago, you’re not imagining things.

According to GasBuddy, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Montana dropped to $3.24 on Monday, July 21, that’s down 3.1 cents from the week before.

Month Over Month, Year Over Year

Compared to last month, prices are down 2.2 cents per gallon. And if you look back to this time last year, it’s an even bigger drop, Montanans are paying 27.7 cents less per gallon than they were in July 2024. That’s not pocket change!

Lowest and Highest Prices in Montana

As of Sunday, the cheapest gas in the state was spotted at $2.68 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. On the flip side, someone out there was paying as much as $3.89. (Ouch.) That's quite the spread depending on where you're filling up.

National Numbers Don’t Quite Match

Nationally, GasBuddy reports the average price of gas dropped 1.7 cents this week, landing at $3.09 per gallon. But here's where it gets a little wonky. AAA’s numbers are a tad different. According to them, the national average is actually $3.14 per gallon.

AAA vs. GasBuddy: Close but Not the Same

When it comes to Montana specifically, the two services are pretty much on the same page. AAA reports the state average is $3.25, just a penny higher than GasBuddy’s number. That’s close enough that we’ll call it a tie.

Where to Find the Cheapest (and Priciest) Gas in Montana

AAA says the most expensive gas in the state is in Petroleum County, where prices are averaging $3.89 a gallon. The cheapest? Fittingly, Treasure County, where drivers are paying around $3.09 per gallon. Treasure, indeed.

A Look Back at the Peak

For those who like to reflect (or cringe), Montana’s highest average price for regular gas was on June 19, 2022. On that day, the average price hit $4.97 per gallon. Compared to that, today’s prices feel like a deal.
