The City of Billings has officially named Matt Hoppel as the new Fire Chief of the Billings Fire Department, effective immediately. The announcement follows a comprehensive internal recruitment and assessment process conducted in collaboration with GMP Consulting.

Veteran of the Department

Chief Matt Hoppel began his public safety career in 1991 as a dispatcher for fire, ambulance, and law enforcement services in Laurel. Two years later, he became a full-time police officer and later a Field Training Officer before joining the Billings Fire Department in 1998.

Throughout his time with the department, Chief Hoppel has served in nearly every role, including Firefighter, Engineer, Captain, Deputy Fire Marshal, Training Chief, and Battalion Chief. A large part of his career has centered around training, a passion that continues to drive his commitment to the department.

Hoppel is actively involved with the International Society of Fire Service Instructors, where he serves on the Board of Directors, Executive Board, and as Director at Large. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the Montana Fire Chiefs Association.

Most recently, Chief Hoppel served as interim fire chief. His deep knowledge of the department’s inner workings and consistent leadership made him the standout choice for the role. Outside of work, Chief Hoppel and his wife have three grown children, all currently attending Montana State University in Billings.

A Leader Beyond the City

Chief Hoppel isn’t just a respected leader in Billings- his influence extends well beyond city limits. He holds the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing and sits on the Board of Directors for both the Montana Fire Chiefs Association and the Past International Society of Fire Service Instructors. He was also recently inducted as a fellow with the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation.
