Montana Secrets: Discover More by Living Like a Tourist
Have you ever worked and saved for something so long that it felt like a dream come true when it finally happened? That was us. After years of scrimping and saving, my husband and I finally bought our dream home. It sat on a nice piece of land in a quiet rural town, far enough from the noise to breathe, but close enough to the basics that life was comfortable. We had freedom, space, and a little slice of heaven to call our own.
Forced to Leave Our Dream Home Behind
Just a year after closing on our dream home, when we were still settling into the rhythm, we got hit with news that turned our world upside down. My husband’s job was transferring him. Suddenly, instead of planting deeper roots, we were boxing up our memories and putting a “For Sale” sign on the place we thought would be forever.
Choosing Adventure: Learning to Live Like Tourists Everywhere We Go
It would have been easy to get stuck in bitterness about losing that dream home (I admit that sometimes, even still, sadness over having to leave our home still creeps into my chest), but somewhere in the middle of packing boxes, we decided on a new approach: to live like tourists, no matter where we landed. That meant exploring, seeking out new adventures, and soaking in the culture and experiences around us instead of waiting for “someday.”

Breaking Routines and Discovering What’s Right in Front of Us All
People often comment on how much my family sees and does. They’re surprised when we talk about visiting places and trying things that they’ve never done, even though they’ve lived in Montana their entire lives. The truth is, it’s easy to take our surroundings for granted. We get busy, we fall into routines, and before we know it, whole years have passed without stepping outside our normal bubble.
One New Adventure Each Month Can Change Everything
Here’s my encouragement: start small. Pick one new thing to do or one new place to visit each month. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive. It could be a local museum, a hiking trail you’ve never tried, a small festival, or even a new restaurant across town. Little by little, you’ll start to see your home, and your life, in a whole new way.

Life’s Adventure Is Right Outside Your Door
The truth is, life isn’t waiting for the perfect dream house or the perfect season. It’s happening right now, right outside your front door. So grab your calendar, mark a date, and commit to exploring something new. You might be surprised how much joy and adventure is waiting in your own backyard.
