Let's be honest, Montanans love their dogs.

A mean, there's a reason they're called man's best friend. The loyalty that a dog shows is unlike any other animal out there, and for many of us living in Big Sky Country, we consider our dogs part of the family.

Whether you use your pooch for hunting, working, or just a cuddle buddy, you will certainly find about every breed of dog known to man here in Montana, from purebreds to mutts, we've got them all.

Of course, some dog breeds are known to be a little more aggressive than others. Whether it's their size or their strength, certain breeds might not be the best fit for you and your family.

As far as popular breeds go, the most popular dog breed in Montana according to Forbes is the Australian Shepard. Known for their high IQ and energy, the Australian Shepard is perfect for farm and ranch life and makes a great family pet as well.

However, there is one dog breed that many consider to be not only dangerous but hard to handle. The wolf/dog hybrid is a cross between a dog and an actual wolf.  The breed has been around for hundreds of years and records show that the cross-breeding began back in the 1700s.

Are wolfdogs legal in Montana?

They are.  Montana is one of a handful of states where you can breed and buy wolfdogs. Many owners will defend the breed and say that they are wonderful animals and companions, however, experts in the animal world will remind you that anything bred with a wild animal can be unpredictable.

As far as North America goes, the grey wolf is the most popular used when breeding. Typically the grey wolf is bred with either a German Shepard, Siberian Husky, or Alaskan Malmute.
