What to Expect at Billings’ Best Pet Costume Contest

Pets are somewhat like us when it comes to dressing up for Halloween. Some love it, others, not so much. If you and your pet fall into the "I LOVE IT!!" category, you'll want to join the fun at Shipton's Big R West on Saturday, October 25, for Pet-O-Ween. It's arguably one of the best pet costume contests in Billings.

The 24th annual event typically features dozens and dozens of dogs, some cats, perhaps a rabbit or two, and maybe even some goats, as seen last year. We've seen hamsters, a horse (!), a parrot, and other critters too. If it's a pet, it counts. 

Although I think they instituted a "no horse" policy since that one time, a couple of years ago. Maybe give them a call before you load up the horse trailer?

Billings' Pet-O-Ween starts with registration at 11 am.

The indoor pet costume contest starts at high noon, and we're typically wrapped up by 1 PM or shortly after. Arrive early for check-in, and feel free to browse pet-friendly Shipton's while you're waiting.

A panel of judges will score each entrant on several categories, which may include Originality, Creativity, Spookiness, Cuteness, etc.

Attendees will enjoy complimentary Barq's Root Beer and juicy hot dogs, and everyone can receive plenty of free pet-product samples. A photographer is on-site to capture your pet's shining moment on the runway, plus the front "stage" makes a great background for personal photo ops, too.

Enter your pet in one of four categories:

• Small Pet
• Medium Pet
• Large Pet
• Owner and Pet

There is no cost to enter.

Winners in each category will score a $75 Shipton's Big R Gift Card (perfect timing for hunting season or holiday shopping!), plus free Loyall Life dog food. A Loyall Life representative will be there with lots of goodies like frisbees, food scoops, bandanas, etc.
