It’s officially spooky season, and nothing sets the mood like a good ghost story. Every town has its share of allegedly haunted places, and Billings is no exception. In fact, we might have more than our fair share of creepy corners and paranormal hot spots.

If you’re looking to chase a chill down your spine this fall, here are some local haunts worth checking out. Most are open to the public or even offer tours.

Western Heritage Center

This former Carnegie Library on Montana Avenue is rumored to host more than history. The Montana Paranormal Research Society once recorded disturbing EVP voices here, including one that repeated the word “fear.” Others claim to have spotted a shadowy figure in the windows after hours. Moss Mansion

The Moss Mansion looks like something straight out of a horror movie, and locals have long whispered about spirits roaming its halls. Personally, I still glance at the windows when I drive by at night, half-expecting to see something.

The Moss always puts on Halloween events. Check out their event calendar here. Book early, because they typically sell out fast.

Yellowstone Art Museum

It’s easy to forget that the YAM used to be the county jail, complete with a hanging room. Tours are available, so contact the museum for details.

Daisy Dukes

Employees from its Casey’s Golden Pheasant days swore the building was haunted, with areas so unsettling that staff refused to enter. Whether today’s tenants have banished the ghosts or just learned to live with them remains a mystery.

The Dude Rancher Lodge

Perhaps one of Billings’ most famous haunted sites, the Dude Rancher Lodge, has a “haunted room” that’s been the subject of countless stories. Years ago, I even tried an EVP experiment there and captured some faint, unexplained voices.

The hotel doesn’t host ghost tours itself, but it is the starting point for the Montana Fun Adventures Downtown Haunted Places Tour. Book a tour here.
