Anyone who has lived anywhere long enough knows that certain holidays seem to stitch themselves into the heart. Thanksgiving is one of those days. The kind filled with the smell of candied yams bubbling in the oven and a pot of gravy so irresistible that small fingers often found their way in for a secret taste.

Some memories from those years come back to me like little Polaroids. Leaves crunching under fast moving feet in my grandparent’s yard. The deep warmth of a wood stove that made post dinner naps feel downright magical. Thanksgiving was also one of the rare days when kids earned a seat at the formal dining room table, the one usually reserved for special company. In those rooms, my laughter and the laughter of my siblings felt a little louder and the world felt a little slower. There were no screens chirping or buzzing for attention, just a family creating memories without even realizing it.

The Gingerbread House Tradition Everyone Looked Forward To

In my life, one tradition stands out from all the others. While the grownups focused on the feast, the kids sat around the kitchen table building gingerbread houses. No one is quite sure who came up with the idea, but it was brilliant. Frosting glued walls together while candy decorations disappeared into little mouths almost as quickly as they were placed. Every year it turned into a friendly competition. Who could build the best house. Who could keep the roof from sliding off. Who could finish before eating all the gumdrops. It kept the peace, sparked creativity and made the holiday feel even more magical.
