The Justice Department is increasing its efforts to address unsolved violent crimes in Indian Country by dispatching 60 FBI personnel to 10 field offices nationwide over six months, including in Montana.

This deployment marks the most extensive allocation of FBI resources to help investigate cases of missing and murdered indigenous individuals.

Collaboration Across Jurisdictions

FBI agents will work closely with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Tribal police to solve crimes that cross different areas. They will use high-tech tools to solve cases and make sure the people responsible are held accountable. The U.S. Attorney’s Offices will be responsible for taking legal action on cases brought forward from these investigations.

Addressing Disproportionate Crime Rates

Attorney General Pamela Bondi emphasized the importance of dealing with the much higher crime rates in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. By increasing the number of FBI agents and working more closely with other law enforcement agencies, the Justice Department is aiming to make sure these communities receive fairness and justice.

Victim-Centered Solutions

FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the dedication to finding violent criminals and missing people in tribal areas. Operation Not Forgotten shows the commitment to providing more resources to protect these communities and find those who have gone missing.

Renewed Focus on Combatting Crime

Operation Not Forgotten expands on the programs introduced during President Trump's first term in office with Executive Order 13898, which created a special team to help find missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives.
