There’s an important change happening at the United States Postal Service that may impact residents of Billings when it comes to mail delivery.

Beginning April 1, 2025, the USPS will make big changes to how it delivers First-Class Mail. This is part of a 10-year plan called Delivering for America, which is designed to tackle the financial issues the mail service is facing and adapt to the way people use mail these days.

What's Changing at the USPS?

In the last decade, the USPS has lost a substantial amount of money, around $100 billion, mainly because people are using less regular mail due to more online communication. On the other hand, online shopping has increased, leading to more packages being sent. This change in what people use mail for has made it necessary for the USPS to make some adjustments to keep their services running smoothly.

The Delivering for America plan will happen in two parts, starting on April 1 and then on July 1. USPS is making changes to how they deliver mail to make it more reliable and cost-effective. This includes tweaking delivery times for First-Class Mail and other services while still promising to deliver Ground Advantage in up to five days and local First-Class mail in up to three days.

Also, a new system will be used to add regional codes to mail addresses, so postal workers can finish their routes sooner and travel further distances. These changes are meant to make mail delivery more dependable while saving around $36 billion over the next ten years.

USPS Financial Situation

It's worth mentioning that the USPS doesn't use tax dollars to run its operations. Instead, it makes money from selling postage, products, and services. The reason for introducing new standards and ways of working is so that the USPS can reach its goals of being financially stable and up-to-date.
