A significant water main break has caused major traffic disruptions in Billings, prompting an urgent response from city crews and a public safety alert for drivers.

Westbound Central Ave Closed, Eastbound Down to One Lane

As of now, westbound traffic on Central Avenue is completely shut down at 15th Street West. Eastbound traffic is reduced to just one lane, causing congestion and delays in an already busy corridor. The break has destroyed a portion of the roadway, making it unsafe for vehicles to pass.

Crews Working to Restore Water and Repair the Road

City crews are actively flushing the water main and working to restore service as quickly as possible. Officials estimate that repairs will take approximately two days, depending on conditions. In the meantime, drivers are being urged to plan their route before travel.

Increased Water Demand

As temperatures rise, so does water usage, and that can put additional stress on the city’s aging water distribution system. The City of Billings notes that warmer weather often leads to more frequent breaks and leaks, especially in older infrastructure.

Use Caution Around Work Zones

Motorists are reminded to follow all traffic control signs, stay alert, and drive slowly through the affected area. Crews and heavy equipment will be on-site throughout the repair process, and their safety depends on responsible driving from the public.
