When Downtown Billings Glows With Luminaria, Love and Hope Shine Bright
There are some moments in our community that feel bigger than just an event. They feel like a heartbeat, like the whole city is taking a deep breath together. That’s what Celebrate For Life is all about. On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Downtown Billings will glow with music, connection, and remembrance as Yellowstone Relay For Life brings neighbors together for an evening that honors every life touched by cancer.
Downtown Block Party Brings Music, Food, and Community Spirit
From 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., Broadway and 2nd Ave N will transform into a free, family friendly block party. After Saturday Live wraps up, the celebration kicks in with live performances, food, activities for kids, auctions, and even a concert by Big Dipper. It’s the kind of night where you’ll bump into friends, see familiar faces, and feel that shared sense of togetherness that makes Billings so special.
Luminaria Tribute Fills Downtown With Light and Love
The most moving part of the evening comes as the sun sets. Luminaria, glowing candlelit bags, will line the streets in honor and memory of loved ones. Each bag carries a name, a story, and a reminder that no one fights cancer alone. Standing there, surrounded by light, you feel it: hope, love, and a deep connection that words can’t quite capture.

Memorial Photo Displays Turn Downtown Into a Living Gallery
This year, the remembrance grows even more personal. Families can choose to include gallery style portraits in the Memorial Photo Displays, creating a powerful visual tribute to the people we carry in our hearts. These portraits will be woven into the remembrance area, turning downtown into something like a living, breathing gallery of love and memory.
A Celebration of Life, Hope, and Community Strength
Sheri Hanson-Smith, the event chair, put it best: “Celebrate For Life is exactly what it sounds like, a celebration of every life, hope, and the fight.” This night isn’t just about remembering, it’s about standing side by side with survivors, caregivers, and neighbors, and showing up for one another in a way that feels tangible.
Every Light and Gift Fuels the Fight Against Cancer
Every luminaria, every team donation, and every dollar raised through Celebrate For Life fuels the American Cancer Society’s work. That means life-saving research, free rides to treatment, 24/7 support lines, and local programs here in Montana. When you take part, you’re not just lighting up a bag, you’re lighting the path toward a future where cancer doesn’t have the last word.
Many Ways to Honor, Remember, and Get Involved
You can take part in this special night in a number of ways. Purchase a luminaria in honor or memory of a loved one, available online or in person at Underriner dealerships, 777 Fitness & Wellness, or Altana on 24th Street. Families also have the opportunity to reserve a Memorial Photo Display, a unique way to share their loved one’s story. Others may choose to start or join a team, donate, or become a sponsor.
If rolling up your sleeves is more your style, volunteers are always needed to help with set-up and luminaria placement during the week leading up to the event. All the details, including quick links and sign-ups, can be found through the “Celebrate For Life” Facebook event page or by visiting celebrateforlifemt.com.
