If you missed it, earlier this month, a 47-year-old man from Cape Coral, Florida, discovered why Yellowstone National Park advises visitors to maintain a safe distance from wildlife. He was gored by a bison after apparently getting too close. Fortunately, he escaped with only minor injuries, but what happened should serve as a powerful reminder that wild animals are, indeed, wild.

First Bison Incident of the Year

This is the first reported bison-related injury in Yellowstone for 2025. In comparison, there were two similar incidents last year and one in 2023. While one incident may not seem like much, park officials know how quickly things can escalate when safety rules aren’t followed.

Yes, Bison Are Cute. No, You Shouldn’t Get Close.

We get it, seeing a bison in person is exciting. They're huge, majestic, and seem pretty chill until they’re not. Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal, and it's often because someone got too close. They’re unpredictable and can run up to three times faster than humans. That's not a race you're going to win.

There Are Rules for a Reason

Yellowstone has clear guidelines to help keep both people and animals safe. Visitors are required to stay at least 25 yards away from large animals like bison, elk, moose, and deer. For bears and wolves, you need even more distance, 100 yards. And if the animal comes closer to you? That’s your cue to back away.

Respect the Wildlife, Respect the Park

Yellowstone isn’t a zoo, and there are no fences or barriers keeping people and animals separate. That means the responsibility is on you to act with common sense and caution. These animals aren't looking for trouble, but they will protect themselves if they feel threatened.

Don’t Let a Fun Day Turn Into a Trip to the ER

Whether you're visiting from Florida or just down the road, remember that getting the perfect photo isn’t worth a trip to the hospital or worse. Give wildlife their space, and enjoy the beauty of Yellowstone from a safe distance.
