Drivers traveling through downtown Billings this coming week should be aware of important roadway updates beginning today, Monday, July 14.

As part of the ongoing preparations for the transition to two-way traffic later this month, crews will begin chip sealing several downtown streets. To help ease the inconvenience, the city is offering free parking throughout the week.

Chip Seal Work Starts July 14

The chip seal process helps preserve road quality and extend pavement life, but it can temporarily impact traffic. While the work is necessary, drivers may experience minor disruptions during this phase of construction.

What You Can Expect

Parking restrictions will be in place in designated chip seal areas for approximately 2 to 4 days at a time. Traffic will continue to move through these zones, although short lane closures and the presence of flaggers may cause brief delays.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution. Avoid sharp turns and sudden braking on freshly sealed surfaces to allow the material to set properly and to protect workers in the area.

Free Parking Available July 14-18

To offset the temporary inconvenience, the city is offering free parking at Park 1 Garage (2912 3rd Avenue North) from Monday, July 14 through Friday, July 18. Whether you’re commuting, shopping, or dining downtown, you’re encouraged to take advantage of the no cost parking option.

What Happens Next

Following chip sealing, pavement markings will be temporarily covered. Roads will remain one-way in their current configuration until temporary markings are installed later in July. Permanent striping will be applied approximately 30 days after the chip seal cures, which is expected by late August.

Please note that the project schedule may shift due to weather or other unforeseen factors.
