Picture this for a second: the sound of dogs barking excitedly across a patio. A cold craft beer sweating in your hand. Smoke rolling off fresh BBQ ribs while a pup you’ve never met decides you’re suddenly its favorite person on Earth. That’s pretty much what's headed to downtown Billings this weekend.

This Sunday, May 31, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., 1889 Brewing Company is teaming up with Freckles and Tomcat Rescue for Barks, Brews, and BBQ, and it might end up being one of the most feel-good events of the summer.

Puppies, Adult Dogs, and Maybe Your Future Best Friend

If you’ve been even casually thinking about adding a dog to your family, this event could hit you right in the heart.

Freckles and Tomcat Rescue says puppies, teen dogs, and adult dogs will all be there looking for homes. And if you’ve ever locked eyes with a rescue dog that suddenly acts like they’ve known you forever, you already know how dangerous that can be for your emotions.

Some people walk into events like this “just to look.” Very few leave emotionally unchanged. And the best part? You’re not walking into a stiff adoption event with folding chairs and awkward silence. This is built to feel fun, relaxed, and welcoming. Bring your friends. Bring your dog. Stay awhile.

BBQ, Craft Beer, and a Patio Full of Good Energy

Even if you’re not looking to adopt, there’s a pretty solid chance you’ll still want to show up hungry.

1889 Brewing Company is turning the afternoon into a full summer kickoff celebration with BBQ, award-winning craft brews, raffle baskets, and a 50/50 raffle.

Freckles and Tomcat Rescue Has Been Quietly Changing Lives Since 2016

Behind the fun event is a rescue group doing some seriously important work.

Freckles and Tomcat Rescue, based out of Hardin, was established in 2016 and runs as a grassroots organization powered largely by volunteers. They rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals that might otherwise never get a second chance.

That means long nights. Emergency vet visits. Bottle feeding tiny puppies. Taking in scared animals nobody else wanted. Showing patience when an animal has forgotten how to trust people.

And they keep doing it anyway.

The Mission Goes Beyond Adoption Days

One thing that stands out about Freckles and Tomcat Rescue is that they're not just focused on finding homes for their animals. They’re trying to tackle the bigger issue, too.

The organization strongly advocates responsible spaying and neutering and hosts free clinics year-round to help reduce animal overpopulation. It’s difficult, expensive, and emotionally draining at times.

But they believe every animal deserves value, care, and a chance, and that belief is what keeps organizations like this alive.

This Event Might End Up Meaning More Than You Expected

Sometimes the best local events are the ones you stop into for a quick visit. You show up thinking you’re grabbing a beer and some BBQ. Then suddenly you’re laughing with strangers over a goofy pup, buying raffle tickets for a good cause, or driving home with dog hair already on your shirt and a new name picked out for the best friend you plan to adopt.

Barks, Brews, and BBQ happens this Sunday, May 31, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1889 Brewing Company, located at 204 N 13th Street in Billings.

Bring your appetite. Bring a friend. And maybe leave a little room in your heart, too.
