Billings’ Bookmobile Turns 75, and Everyone’s Invited to Celebrate
Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to have resources that quietly show up for us year after year. The Bookmobile from Billings Public Library is one of those things. And this December, it’s celebrating a pretty amazing milestone: 75 years of service rolling through Yellowstone County.
This Bookmobile Has Been Showing Up Since 1950
The very first Bookmobile hit the road back on December 10, 1950. Since then, there have been different vehicles, new routes, and evolving services, but the mission stayed the same: bringing books and library access to people who might not otherwise get it. Over the decades, the Bookmobile expanded to serve kids, seniors, nursing homes, and communities spread across thousands of square miles. Even when funding challenges temporarily paused service in the early 1990s, the program found its way back, stronger and more focused than ever.
What the Bookmobile Does Today Might Surprise You
Today, the Bookmobile and Senior Bookmobile cover a lot of ground. They visit schools, parks, neighborhoods, senior living facilities, meal sites, and even deliver materials directly to homebound patrons. They host senior book clubs, bring requested materials straight to readers, and pop up at local outreach events throughout the year. It’s not just about books, it’s about connection.

You’re Invited to Step Inside and Celebrate
To mark 75 years on the road, the library is inviting the community to an open house on Wednesday, December 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Bookmobile will be parked right in the Billings Public Library parking lot on North Broadway, and you’re encouraged to climb aboard, take a look around, and celebrate this milestone up close.
A Photo Exhibit That Tells the Whole Story
If you can’t make the open house, there’s another reason to stop by the library in December. A photo exhibit highlighting the entire history of the Bookmobile will be on display on the First Five Years wall throughout the month. It’s a chance to see how much has changed, and how much has stayed beautifully the same.
More Than a Vehicle, It’s a Promise
At its heart, this anniversary isn’t really about a bus or a set of wheels. It’s about access. For 75 years, the Bookmobile has helped make sure library resources reach people wherever they are, across Yellowstone County, across generations, and across challenges. It’s proof that when a community commits to “making access happen,” it really can.

If you’ve ever borrowed a book, waved when you saw the Bookmobile pull up in your neighborhood, or benefitted from a service you didn’t even realize existed, this celebration is for you, too.
