I’m old enough to remember when owning a record meant holding a hard plastic circle tucked inside a cardboard sleeve and being so very careful with it.

One of the very first records I owned was "Amy Grant," the self-titled debut album from the singer herself. I must have played it a thousand times, until it cracked and the needle skipped so badly it was almost unlistenable. I begged my parents for a replacement, but they never bought one. Still, the music stayed with me.

From Christian Roots to Mainstream Fame

When I was a kid in the 1980s, Amy Grant was a star in the contemporary Christian music world, and to me, she was pure magic. By the early 1990s, she had stepped into the world of mainstream music, and suddenly an entirely new audience was discovering the artist I had loved for years.

Passing the Music On

Now, forty years after discovering Amy Grant, I’m the mom of a little boy about the same age I was when her music first came into my life. I still love her music just as much as I did from the start but now, I get to share it with my son. There’s something really special about introducing your child to songs that helped to shape your own childhood.

Your Chance to See Amy Live

Whether you’ve been listening to Amy Grant since the 1970s or just recently discovered her, this is your chance to experience her in person because she's coming to the Alberta Bair Theater on Wednesday, September 17, and I’m giving away tickets to the show.

How to Win

All you have to do is listen to my show each weekday morning between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. from Monday, August 18 through Friday, August 22. When you hear the Amy Grant mini music montage, open the 95.5 Lite FM app and send me a message with the word “Amy.” That’s it! You’ll be entered for a chance to win a pair of tickets.

Winners will be drawn at random on Monday, August 25 and notified through the 95.5 Lite FM app, so keep an eye on your messages.

What to Listen for

If you don’t have the 95.5 Lite FM app yet, you can download it for free so you’re ready to enter. And just to give you a taste of what’s coming, the montage will include some of Amy’s most loved songs like the ones in the videos above!

This song isn’t in the montage, but I couldn’t resist sharing it. I fell in love with “Father’s Eyes” the very first time I heard it as a child, and all these years later, it still holds my heart and remains a bit of a personal anthem.

Did Anyone Watch These TV Shows in the 1980s and 1990s?

While you might think “watching while distracted” is a modern habit, even back in the day the TV was just… there, humming along while you did other things. These were the shows that weren’t exactly “must-see TV,” more like “might-see TV” — part of the culture, but you had to wonder: who was actually watching?
